Equuleus fought its way to an 11-9, two goal lead with two minutes to play in the semifinals of the 2011 Hampton Cup at the Bridgehampton Polo Club before falling to Circa’s last chukker rally in a 12-11 loss.

“I can’t believe it,” said Equuleus 6-goaler Kris Kampsen. “We had it; we were up by two goals in the final chukker.”

Circa received one goal by handicap from the 20-goal Equuleus team and quickly added to it. A pair of goals from Magoo Laprida and a single goal from Martin Pepa had Circa in front 4-0 after the first seven minutes of play.

After trailing Certified 9-4 at the end of the first three chukkers, KIG staged a second half rally that tied the game at 11-11 in the final six seconds of regulation play. White Birch took control of the game early and charged off to an 8-6 win over Certified in opening round play of the 2011 Hampton Cup at the Bridgehampton Polo Club on Long Island Sunday afternoon.

“It was just one of those kinds of games,” said MVP Kris Kampsen after his Equuleus team eked out a 7-5 win over KIG in first round action at the Bridgehampton Polo Club’s 2011 Hampton Cup.

“They (KIG) must have had over a dozen knock-ins,” Kampsen added, indicating the number of times he and his Equuleus teammates shot at the KIG goal and missed.

Action started slow, with both teams focusing on defense, and didn’t pick up too much after a scoreless opening chukker. Kampsen had an opportunity to score early but missed a 40-yard penalty shot. “I just shanked it,” he said.

Kampsen scored twice from the field in the second while the Equuleus defense held KIG to a single goal from Luis Escobar. After two chukkers Equuleus guarded a narrow 2-1 lead…
