AMG MIAMI BEACH POLO WORLD CUP RECAP: Saturday, April 24, 2010 By Alex Webbe AMG secured a berth in Sunday’s finals of the 2010 AMG Miami Beach Polo World Cup with a resounding 17-4 win over an anemic Setai offense as the beach polo action continued. Pelon Escapite lead all scoring with 9 goals on the day, Nacho Figueras scored 7 times and team captain Michael Liss added 1 goal in the win. AMG lurched out to an 11-2 half time lead with Escapite and Figueras scoring all of the goals while the Setai was limited to 2 penalty goals by 8-goaler Shane Rice. AMG ran the score up to 14-2 on goals from Liss, Escapite and Figueras in the 3rd. Morgan Stanley 12, Bombay Sapphire 11 Morgan Stanley scored a hard fought 12-11 win over the previously undefeated Bombay Sapphire team behind a 9-goal performance from Nic Roldan. Roldan scored 4 first chukker goals and teammate Brandon Phillips added a penalty goal for a 5-0 start. Three more goals from Roldan in the second and single goals from Jeffrey Garber and Brandon Phillips gave Morgan Stanley a 10-2 half time lead. Single goals were scored by Bombay Sapphire’s John Gobin and Luis Escobar. Bombay Sapphire rallied in the 3rd with Escobar scoring 4 times and Gobin adding another goal as they cut the Morgan Stanley lead to 4 goals, 11-7. Roldan accounted for Morgan Stanley’s only goal of the chukker in a penalty shot. The rally continued for Bombay sapphire into the 4th chukker with Escobar scoring twice before Gobin’s 2 goals tied the game at 11-11 in the waning seconds. A penalty goal by Roldan ended the battle with Morgan Stanley riding off the beach with the 12-11 win. Hublot 7, Ferretti 5 The final match of the day featured a high scoring Hublot team who was held to 7 goals by the upstart Ferretti trio as Hublot held on for a 7-5 win. Carlucho Arellano scored the opening goal of the game but was quickly answered by 2 goals from Hublot 9-goaler Matias Magrini. Leo Mandelbaum scored the 1st goal of the second chukker, tying the game at 2-2 before goals from Chet Lott and Magrini gave Hublot a 4-2 half time advantage. Magrini opened the scoring in the 3rd chukker with a goal but the defensively oriented period ended with a 5-3 Hublot lead with Mauricio Devrient converting a penalty goal for the balance of the scoring. Arellano opened the scoring in the 4th chukker before Magrini countered with a penalty goal. Leo Mandelbaum scored his second goal of the game in the 4th chukker before a final goal from Guille Usandizaga closed out the scoring giving Hublot a perfect 2-0 record with the 7-5 win. World Cup action will continue on Sunday with 1 o’clock battle for the Fleischman Memorial cup between Morgan Stanley and Ferretti. Bombay Sapphire and the Setai will meet in the Carl Fischer International Challenge Cup match at 2:30 pm and AMG (2-0) and Hublot (2-0) will face one another in the final of the 2010 AMG Miami Beach Polo World Cup. |
